GUILD
The Fourth Street Guild
The Fourth Street Guild was established in 1986. It is a design/fabrication cooperative that operates as an incubator for new product ideas. We keep overhead costs low and our facility at a high technical level. Our members are encouraged to take risks and develop new product ideas. It’s strength has been in the diversity of it’s members in age, in experience, with complementary knowledge and skill sets.
In 2014, the Guild purchased a 10,000 square foot building near the Mississippi River in north Minneapolis. Guild members (two of whom have graduate architecture degrees) began planning a vision of an ideal studio/fabrication laboratory. We worked together gutting the building and preparing it for the rebuild. As all of the members had at least moderate skills in construction trades, we took on the task of building our own facility. In 2016 we moved into the new building.
The Guild is owned and operated by its designer/ members and is currently home to twelve design professionals of various ages and disciplines. I’m pleased and grateful to have been deeply involved in this amazing project. I find that the Guild’s best and most rewarding asset has always been a membership willing to work together, share information, teach skills, and recognize that we are all better off when we are in this together.
